Assoc. Prof. Dr. MEHMET TÖNGE

Assoc. Prof. Mehmet Tönge, MD was born in Isparta in 1980. He completed his medical education at Süleyman Demirel University Faculty of Medicine between 1998 and 2004 and underwent his residency training in Neurosurgery at Gazi University Faculty of Medicine between 2004 and 2011. He conducted his specialization thesis on ""The effects of duloxetine in a rat peripheral nerve injury model"" under the supervision of Prof. Aydın Paşaoğlu.

In 2008, he received observational and hands-on training at the University of Zurich (Switzerland) in the fields of intraoperative MRI and ultrasound, stereotactic procedures, and minimally invasive aneurysm and brainstem surgery. He also received training in microsurgical anastomoses, endovascular procedures, and white matter dissection. During his residency, he completed the four-year training course series of the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies (EANS) (held in Antwerp – Belgium, Padua – Italy, Prague – Czech Republic, and Tallinn – Estonia) and passed the Turkish Neurosurgery Board Examination in 2009. He fulfilled his mandatory state service at Sinop Atatürk State Hospital (2011–2012) and Çankırı State Hospital (2012–2013).

He began his tenure at Istanbul Medipol University and Medipol Mega University Hospital in 2013. In 2014, he participated in a fellowship program in Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery at the Department of Neurosurgery, Maastricht University, and engaged in experimental and clinical research as a visiting scientist. He worked as a neurosurgeon at Memorial Health Group between 2015 and 2018 and as a Gamma Knife radiosurgery consultant at Istanbul Gayrettepe Florence Nightingale Hospital between 2017 and 2018. He resumed his position at Istanbul Medipol University in 2018.

Since 2023, he has served as the Education Coordinator for the Department of Neurosurgery at Istanbul Medipol University, and he has held the title of Associate Professor since 2024. He completed his doctoral studies—initiated in 2014 at the Maastricht University Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences (MHeNs)—by defending his thesis titled ""Complications in Deep Brain Stimulation Surgery: Avoidance and Management"" in 2025, under the supervision of Prof. Yasin Temel and Prof. Ali Jahanshahi, thereby earning a PhD degree in Neuroscience.

His primary field of expertise is stereotactic and functional neurosurgery. He conducts clinical and scientific research on MR-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS); deep brain stimulation for Parkinson's disease and other movement disorders; Gamma Knife radiosurgery; surgery for pain, spasticity, and epilepsy; psychosurgery; stereotactic biopsy and tumor surgery; and various neuromodulation applications. Additionally, he holds utility model and patent registrations in the field of deep brain stimulation. 

His scientific output comprises 32 national and international articles, 15 book chapters, a role as co-editor of a book, 103 oral/poster presentations, and 56 national and international invited lectures. His work in the fields of deep brain stimulation, stereotactic surgery, radiosurgery, neuromodulation, and neurotechnology is featured in various international indices.

He currently sees patients in the field of Neurosurgery at Medipol Mega University Hospital and performs MRgFUS treatments alongside the PARMER team at Medipol Acıbadem Regional Hospital. He was the first physician and neurosurgeon in the country to earn the title of ""Exablate Specialist"" for MRgFUS treatment. He continues his education, research, and clinical practice activities at Istanbul Medipol University and maintains ongoing scientific collaborations with numerous academic centers, both national and international. By combining his clinical experience with current advancements in neuroscience and neurotechnology, he aims to offer his patients scientifically grounded, personalized, and multidisciplinary treatment options.
