He was born in Ankara on October 8, 1960. He completed his primary and secondary education in Ankara. He graduated from Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine as a medical doctor in 1983.
He fulfilled his mandatory state service in the province of Gaziantep between 1983 and 1985. He began his residency in the Department of Neurosurgery at Marmara University Faculty of Medicine in 1988. He attended training courses organized by the British Council in Glasgow and Edinburgh in 1990; by the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies (EANS) in Warnemünde, Germany (1989), Zaragoza, Spain (1991), Jerusalem, Israel (1992), and Bruges, Belgium (1993); and by the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies (WFNS) in Antalya, Turkey (1994). He participated in clinical studies by visiting the Glasgow Institute of Neurological Sciences in 1990; the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Pittsburgh, the University of Virginia, and the University of Washington in 1992; and the Division of Neurosurgery at Toronto Western Hospital and the Department of Neurosurgery at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in 1994. He became a neurosurgeon in February 1994. He completed a master's degree in Neurophysiology at Marmara University's Institute of Health Sciences in March 1994.
In September 1994, in İzmir, Turkey, he completed the fifth training course of the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies (EANS), took the examinations, and obtained the EANS diploma. On the same date, he took and passed the European Board of Neurosurgery Primary Examination. He began his residency in the Department of Neurosurgery at Marmara University Faculty of Medicine in 1988. Upon returning from the United States in 1997 and beginning work at the VKV American Hospital, Ali Zırh performed functional neurosurgical procedures—utilizing the single-cell level microelectrode recording and stimulation technique available at only a select few centers worldwide—as well as deep brain stimulation (brain pacemaker) implantations. By beginning to work at Medical Park Bahçelievler Hospital in January 2009, he implemented these procedures at a healthcare facility accessible to Social Security Institution patients as well.
Surgical procedures have been continuing at Medipol Mega University Hospital since January 2015. As of September 2018, he continues to see patients at the Medipol University Parkinson's Disease and Movement Disorders Center (PARMER). Dr. Ali Zırh’s 31 years of clinical and surgical experience in the specialized field of Functional Neurosurgery—comprising over 1,600 successful surgical interventions for Parkinson’s and other movement disorders, as well as more than 2,100 deep brain stimulation (brain pacemaker) procedures—have established him as the foremost name in movement disorder surgery in Turkey, while also elevating the center where he performs these operations to the status of an International Training and Reference Center. Dr. Ali Zırh has numerous publications in international journals, eight book chapters, and more than 150 conference papers.
